Starting next season, Dance Unit has a new development in store for all ballet dancers: The Ballet category will be split into two separate categoriesāBallet Repertoire and Neoclassical Ballet.
Our goal is to better accommodate the various stylistic approaches in ballet and give dancers the opportunity to showcase their individual strengths in a more targeted way.
Ballet Repertoire
Ballet RepertoireĀ focuses on the interpretation of the classical ballet repertoire. It covers well-known works, variations, and choreographies from classical balletāwith an emphasis on technique, expression, musicality, and the characteristic aesthetics of classical ballet.
Well known repertoire choreographers include: Marius Petipa, Michel Fokine, Lev Ivanov and many more.
Neoclassical Ballet
Neoclassical balletĀ builds on the technical precision, alignment, and vocabulary of classical ballet while expanding its movement language and artistic possibilities. Classical ballet technique remains the foundation, but traditional forms are explored with greater freedom through extended lines, dynamic movement qualities, unconventional musicality, and contemporary choreographic approaches. The focus is not on replacing ballet technique with contemporary dance, but on developing a broader, more individual and expressive interpretation of ballet.
Why the new categories?
With this new structure, we aim to create more clarity within the categories and allow for a fairer comparison of different ballet styles. At the same time, it opens up new opportunities for dancers and choreographers to showcase their respective strengths and their own unique styles on stage.
The exact rules and judging criteria for both categories will be published along with the rulebook for the upcoming season.
